For the first two weeks of August, 1917, the 9th King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 42 Brigade, 14th Division were training in the Caestre-Hazebrouck area in preparation for their involvement in the Third Battle of Ypres which had just begun. On 6th August, Hazebrouck was bombed by enemy aircraft and shelled by long range guns and it is likely that Joseph Mildern, who died from wounds on 9th August, was wounded then. |
